Secondhand smoke is smoke from burning tobacco products, such as cigarettes, cigars, or pipes. Secondhand smoke also is smoke that has been exhaled, or breathed out, by the person smoking. Tobacco smoke contains more than 7,000 chemicals, including hundreds that are toxic and about 70 that can cause cancer.
Secondhand smoke is BAD for Everyone!
People breathing seondhand smoke are exposed to the same tar, nicotine, and cancer-causing chemicals as the person smoking.
Children: Exposure to Secondhand smoke can cause an increase in asthma attacks, colds and ear infections. Around 300,000 cases of bronchitis and pneumonia are diagnosed in young children every year.
Babies: Exposure to secondhand smoke increases the risk of babies dying from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
Pregnant women: If women who are pregnant smoke of breathe secondhand smoke their baby will be more likely to be born premature. Also if a women smokes during her pregnancy she is more likely to have a miscarriage.
Adults with health problems: Secondhand smoke can make asthma and other breathing problems worse.
Healthy Adults: About 41,000 nonsmokers die each year from heart disease due to being exposed to secondhand smoke. In addition another 7,000 nonsmokers die from lung cancer each year due to secondhand smoke exposure.
Pets: Animals such as dogs and cats that are exposed to secondhand smoke are more likely to develop cancer, including lung cancer. In addition pet birds are more likely to have respiratory and skin problems if exposed to secondhand smoke.
